In London Livery Companies, the role of Clerk is that of a chief executive official. The Stationers' Company appointed its first Clerk in 1571. Early Clerks were booksellers, but by the end of the seventeenth century, legal training had become a prerequisite. Clerks are required to attend all meetings of the Company Court (executive body) and committees, and to keep the Company's books. The Clerk was also responsible for maintaining the Stationers' Register (entry books of copies) until 1780, when the office of Registrar was created. See Myers, 'The Stationers' Company Archive 1554-1984', p.3 for a more detailed definition of the role..
