In 1619, property in Wood Street, consisting of six or eight tenements lying either side of Friar's Alley and abutting southward on Wood Street Counter, was purchased using bequests from John Norton. The bequest money was partially conditional on provision to the poor, and on the provision of cakes and ale for Liverymen on Ash Wednesday. Due to the complexity of the system of rent collection and dole distribution, these tasks were transferred from the Renter Wardens to the Clerk. By 1620, the unencumbered rents from the Feathers Tavern, the Dark House and Wood Street amounted to between £80 and £90. The Wood Street properties continued to earn money for the Company until the late nineteenth-century. However, their management grew cumbersome, and they were sold in 1946 to Messrs. I. & R. Morley.
