The Stationers' Company and Printing Industry Technical Board was established in 1920 as part of an ongoing initiative by the Company, started as early as 1873 through the influence of Sir Sydney Waterlow, to support technical education in the printing business. The first chairman was Edward Unwin, then Master of the Stationers' Company, and its honorary secretary was Liveryman J.R. Riddell. The Board drew up a scheme for examinations and appointed examiners. The examinations were held at Stationers' Hall until 1940. The Board also organised a series of craft lectures delivered at Stationers' Hall. These lectures continued until the winter of 1939-40. After the Second World War, the Board's trustees agreed to transfer administration of the examinations to the City and Guilds Institute. In 1952 it was formally acknowledged that the Stationers' Company and Printing Industry Technical Board was no longer required.
