Note
After the final expiration of statutory registration in 1924, the Stationers’ Company set up a new, voluntary register. Works were entered for a fee, and registration expired after 7 years, at which point it could be renewed for a further 7 years. If the owner of a work chose not to renew, their submitted copies were returned to them (subject to contact details being current). The voluntary register was administered by the Beadle, or, when appointed, the Assistant Clerk. In 2000, this system was considered no longer viable. Any works still within the seven-year period were returned to their owners where contactable, or otherwise destroyed.
