John Nichols (1745-1826) served his apprenticeship to the eminent and scholarly printer William Bowyer. Upon completion of his apprenticeship, Nichols became Bowyer’s business partner and then, upon Bowyer’s death, the sole proprietor of one of London’s foremost printing houses. The business continued to grow under Nichols, especially once he became printer and editor of Gentleman’s Magazine. In 1804, Nicholas was elected Master of the Stationers’ Company. He exhibited an Interest in charity during his lifetime, subscribing to charities in London and Middlesex, as well as helping with the purchase of land for a sea-bathing infirmary at Margate. Nichols’s bequest to the Stationers’ Company established a yearly dividend payment to three compositors or pressmen, over the age of 45, who had been freemen of the Company for a minimum of 21 years.

The bequest was later updated by Nichols’s son, John Bowyer Nicholas (1779-1863), who shared his father’s charitable spirit, serving on committees for Margate Infirmary, the Royal Literary Fund, and the Royal Humane Society.
