Leather-bound album with letters pasted in. The letters contain responses of authors to a circular sent by publisher John William Parker, as part of his campaign for cheaper books in the free-trade controversy of 1852. The circular posed the question as to whether or not eminent authors considered it acceptable to ‘undersell’ books below the established retail price. Parker published the collection of letters as a volume entitled The Opinions of Certain Authors on the Publishing Question. The authors were overwhelmingly in favour of free trade, and restrictions on printing were eliminated later in the year. Includes a letter from Charles Darwin.
