Company barge records
GB 2156 TSC/G/05 · Subseries · 1680-1994
Part of The Stationers' Company Archive

Legal, financial and administrative records relating to the Company's State barge, used for the ceremonial water procession on Lord Mayor's Day from 1680 until 1849, and to the Company's bargehouses.

The Court had ordered in September 1679 that a committee be set up to look into the possibilities of the Company acquiring its own barge in which the Master and Court might attend the Lord Mayor of London in his procession by water to Westminster on Lord Mayor's Day. The committee duly met and decided that the money required should be raised by subscription scheme so that the Livery could raise the sum themselves. 187 pounds was raised by the end of the year, and the barge was built and launched by spring 1680. Prior to this occasion the Company had either not participated in the procession or had appeared in a hired barge.
