Statutes relating to printing in England and the activities of the Stationers' Company.

This was the earliest public enactment to mention the Stationers' Company, and the first to affect its procedure after its in incorporation. As part of wider provisions for the suppression of superstition, hypocrisy and abuses, section 51 proposes licensing in order to remedy 'great abuse in the printers of bookes', specifially requiring the Company's obedience with regard to licensing by the City of London Court of High Commission.

On front pastedown is written 'Giuseppe Valletta 21 Aprile 1700'.

On page opposite front pastedown is written in a modern hand the initals 'SH' and the text 'See reference in par. no 51 (verso of D1) 'agaynst heretical & seditious bookes' Queen Elizabeth 'straytely commaundeth all maner her subjects, and specially the Wardens and companie of Stationers to be obedient'. Underneath this is written '(Printed by R. Jugge 1559) Master 1568, 1569, 1573 and 1574 ?STC 10095'.

General accounts and financial records.

Records relating to the establishment, constitution, privileges and internal regulation of the Stationers' Company.

Records of trade activities specific to the Stationers' Company, chiefly concerning print regulation, legal deposit and the Stationers' Register. Additional trade activities were carried out by the Company's joint stock company dealing in titles owned by the Company, the English Stock; for ease of reference, English Stock records are catalogued in a separate subfonds, TSC/STO.

Records of the formation and administration of the Stationers' Company's primary joint stock company.

Records relating to donations or bequests to the Company for charitable purposes; the charities and estates adminstered by the Company; and other Company property, such as the barge, Hall and moveables. The charity records include those relating to the Stationers' Company School, in existence 1858-1982.

The Company's property in the Irish Estates, the Manor of Pellipar, was owned by the English Stock, so its records can be found in the English Stock subfonds (TSC/STO).

Official minutes of the meetings of the Court of Assistants, signed by the Master from 2 Mar 1875-2 Jul 1991 and intermittently from 30 Jul 1991-25 Jun 2006.

For each meeting the decisions of the Court are recorded as orders. From Court Book F (1683-97), the minutes are standard in formula.

Text of some documents received by the company have been copied in.

Entries are in chronological order; minutes of two or more courts are often conflated under one date; minutes are divided into paragraphs with headings written in the margin; minutes for some committee meetings are included; layout of record is inconsistent. Dates are listed at the top, recorded predominantly in Latin to Apr 1651 and with regnal year often used in addition to calendar year to Aug 1630; names of those present are often omitted, particularly in conflated entries; when listed, names are given in the margin of the minutes, parallel to or below the date, to Mar 1615, and centrally under the date from Mar 1615.

At top of title page is inscribed 'The Book of orders in the Company of Stac[i]oners made the ffirste daye of Nouember An[n]o 1602 Quadragesimo Quarto R Ris Elizabethe Mr Byshope then beinge Master Mr Mann Mr Waterson then beinge Wardens Libir C:'; at foot of page are notes listing folio numbers of entries relating to the appointment of [Mr] Woodstreete as a feoffee, the 'Gramer case' and 'Oxford & ye Comp.'

Attached to folio 114r is a slip of paper inscribed 'W[illia]m Tyrril of Adthrop in ye County of Northam[pton] bound to Rich[ar]d Woodland in 10L to pay 5L on the 16th of July next'.

At back of volume is inscribed an extract from a letters patent of James I, giving the High Commission further powers over those offending against Star Chamber decrees 'touchinge the reformac[i]on of divers disorders in the printinge and utteringe of Bookes'.

Entries are in chronological order; dates are predominantly in Latin from Jul 1662; location of court meetings is rarely given except during the rebuilding of Stationers' Hall following the Great Fire of London (folios 124r-140v); minutes are divided into paragraphs with headings written in the margin; type of court meeting is not always stated until 7 Aug 1666; minutes for some committee meetings are included; layout of record is not consistent throughout volume.

Entries in volume mention the Great Plague and the Great Fire of London, including:

folio 112v: '...and likewise such other small sumes to ye poore from time to time (during this tyme of Infection) as shall be thought fitt...', 26 Sep 1665.

folio 124r: 'Co[u]rt 2 October 1666 Att Cookes Hall, being the first co[u]rt after the ffire in ye City...Ordered, That the Wardens provide laborers for the digging upp, and searching the ruins, and rubbish, at Stationers Hall; and that the same be watched, day and night, at the doing thereof'.

Entry for 3 Jan 1678 (folios 294v-310r) includes the texts of company by-laws passed forthwith, titled 'Orders Rules & Ordinances ordained devised & made by the Ma[ste]r & Keepers or Wardens & Com[m]alty of the Mistery or Art of Stac[i]oners of the Citty of Lond[o]n for the well governing of that Society', and texts of the Master's, Wardens', freeman's, Clerk's, Beadle's and Assistants' oaths.
