Evan Tyler (fl. 1639-1682) served as King’s Printer in Edinburgh and Master of the Stationers’ Company during a long and successful career. Tyler left significant sums of money in his will for various charitable causes, including hospitals and church relief for the poor. At the time of making his will, Tyler had 620 pounds with the Company. His bequest to the Company established a loan scheme for ‘new beginners’ in the trade. It established that ten young freemen of the Company receive fifty pounds each. After four years, the young freemen had to repay the loan, free of interest, so that it then could be recycled into ten new young freemen. The archive holds records of Tyler’s bequest, including early nominees and their sponsors.

i: signed and witnessed requirement that the Company pay Evan Tyler the sum of £106, 16 Nov 1681.

ii: notes of debtors to the Company for loans made under the Tyler and Norton bequests, 1680s [2 items]. Recipients of the Tyler bequest (1684) include: Arthur Jones, Francis Leach, Henry Clarke, Thomas Moore, Ralph Simpson. Recipients of the Tyler bequest (1682) include: William Freeman, John Heptinstall, John Redmayne Jr., John Wallis.
