Letter presenting a South African Medal to the Company in recognition of its assistance in raising and equipping the City of London Imperial Volunteers for active service in South Africa.

Leather-bound album with letters pasted in. The letters contain responses of authors to a circular sent by publisher John William Parker, as part of his campaign for cheaper books in the free-trade controversy of 1852. The circular posed the question as to whether or not eminent authors considered it acceptable to ‘undersell’ books below the established retail price. Parker published the collection of letters as a volume entitled The Opinions of Certain Authors on the Publishing Question. The authors were overwhelmingly in favour of free trade, and restrictions on printing were eliminated later in the year. Includes a letter from Charles Darwin.

Unused Company annual diaries, dated 1930-1941 and 1947-1963; also includes almanacks produced for the Company, 1844.
