At a meeting of the Stationers' Company Court (governing body) on 4th July 1780, bibliographic scholar William Herbert was given permission to borrow and transcribe the three earliest volumes of the Stationers' entry books and apprenticeship registers. Herbert used the volumes to revise Joseph Ames's 'Typographical Antiquities'. His transcripts are now held by the Stationers' Company Archive.
