On 20th November 1792, John Reeves established the Association for the Protection of Liberty and Property against Republicans and Levellers at the Crown and Anchor Tavern in London, with himself as chairman. With similar institutons formed across the country, this developed into a Loyalist movement reacting against nationwide economic discontent, the spread of radical ideas with Tom Paine's 'Rights of Man', and the spectre of revolution in continental Europe.
