In 1573 Jane Kevall died, releasing for the Stationers' Company, of which her husband Stephen was a member, a house in Salutation Alley off Thames street, Billingsgate, on condition that £5 a year was paid to the poor of the parish of St. Mary-at-Hill. The house, known as the Dark House, was divided and leased. In 1817 there was a party wall dispute between the Company and the City, upon whose property the Dark House abutted. The house was unsuccessfully offered to the City for sale. The Billingsgate Market Act of 1871 made its sale compulsory, and following several unsuccessful negotiations by the Company, it was bought by the Corporation of London in 1874.
